Homework Free Weekends

Dear Parents and Guardians:

In 2003, the Verona Municipal Alliance (VMAC) began the wonderful tradition of Verona Family Night in our community. This school year, Verona Family Night was scheduled on October 19th and March 27th. These nights provide families and students the opportunity to relax and spend quality time at home with family and friends.

In this continued spirit, our teachers, counselors, and administrators recently met to explore ways to increase family time and promote a healthy school-life balance. As educators, we understand how hard our students work to achieve both inside and outside of the classroom. But we also recognize that our students benefit from rest, relaxation, and time with loved ones.

For these reasons, we are happy to announce that on February 1st and May 17th, all schools and teachers in the Verona Public Schools will support two homework free weekends. This is a critical step in the right direction. This means, that in addition to Verona Family Night, no homework will be due and no assessments will be given on Monday, February 4th and Monday, May 20th. Our goal is to support a healthy school-life balance without compromising student academics or achievement. With the creation of these additional dates, we hope our students will spend the time connecting with family, engage in meaningful conversations, and perhaps even support an important cause within our community.

As educators, the Verona Public School District appreciates how homework can reinforce and extend the concepts learned in the classroom. Equally important, our team understands the value of shared downtime and renewal. We hope that these additional weekends are enjoyed and appreciated by your children and family. A special thank you to our staff members who made this initiative possible. Thank you for your continued support of the Verona Public Schools.

All my best,

Dr. Rui Dionisio
Superintendent of Schools
